Cinema Nova is an essential part of the Lygon Street scene and Carlton’s cultural fabric.

Cinema Nova was established in August 1992 in Carlton as a collaboration between two landmark theatres, the Longford Cinema in South Yarra and the Valhalla Cinema in Richmond & Westgarth. Opening as a twin theatre, we’ve grown to become the biggest independent cinema in the southern hemisphere, with 16 screens and the Nova Bar & Kitchen, offering Melbourne moviegoers more variety than any other cinema.

Showcasing the best in quality, independent, Australian, art-house and international film as well as festivals including Melbourne Queer Film Festival, Monster Fest, Melbourne Documentary Film Festival and Transitions Film Festival. Plus events such as The RoomCinema FiascoCineTriviaFilm Club, Overnight Twilight Marathon, and more.

Cinema Nova was among the first cinemas in the country to start screening stage productions and art from around the world, and we now draw thousands to see New York’s Met Opera, London’s National Theatre and go behind-the-scenes with the world’s best art galleries and museums.

With our exclusive seasons we’ve brought Melbournians their only chance to watch on the big screen films such as Mid90s, Three Identical Strangers, Ex Machina, Snowpiercer, Mud, Cabin in the Woods, Margaret, Citizenfour, Winter Sleep, Under the Skin, The Bling Ring, I Am Eleven and Lygon Street: Si Parlo Italiano.

Our Meet the Filmmaker and curated events allow our audience to experience film up close and personally.

Then every Monday (excl. public holidays) come on down to Lygon St for Melbourne’s cheapest movie tickets at Cinema Nova’s Discount Monday! All movies $7 before 4pm / $10 after.

Cinema Nova is fully licensed, allowing alcoholic beverages to be taken into most sessions. With a wine-list that is curated with as much care as the films we screen, every visit to Nova has a sense of occasion.

Cinema Nova acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, and pays respect to their Elders past and present.
