Time for a FREE Film Binge!

It’s actually happening! AGPPA (The Australian Government Primary Principals Association) issued a call on Friday 9th March 2018

“…on Federal and State Governments to commit to a full and independent review of NAPLAN, and the MySchool website, which have now been in place for a decade. This must include an analysis of the impact on students and schools.”

AGPPA President Ian Anderson said

“Schools use a range of measures to assess important abilities, knowledge and behaviours of students, well beyond the narrow focus of literacy and numeracy testing covered in NAPLAN. Decisions regarding school effectiveness, student performance and resourcing levels must be based much more broadly than on NAPLAN data. Schools also focus on the development of creativity, critical thinking, application of problem solving skills and personal attributes which are needed to develop active and informed future citizens of Australia.”

Here is a curated selection of binge-worthy films that will inspire you to think about what really is education?

About the film Alphabet Is the modern education system really the best way to learn? Director of WE FEED THE WORLD, Erwin Wagenhofer, approaches the subject of education much more comprehensively and radically then is usually the case. Almost all discussions of education limit themselves to considering forms of competitive schooling, in which performance is celebrated above all else. Wagenhofer, by way of contrast, pursues the thought-structures behind this: what we learn shapes our reserves of knowledge, but it is how we learn that shapes our way of thinking.
About the film Inspiring Teachers
Teachers are the unsung heroes of our community. Many people can remember at least one teacher who inspired them during their formative years – someone who played a pivotal role in their lives. In a series of four half hour programs we follow four teachers to explore what makes them inspiring and what impact they have on students. The series celebrates the work of teachers who are often undervalued. Where does this passion for teaching derive from and how is it conveyed to pupils? Shot as observational portraits each episode features one teacher, following them from the classroom to their extra curricular work and the relationships with their students, parents and the community at large.
About the Film Ce N’est Qu’un Debut – (JUST A BEGINNING) follows a pre-school school class over two years – but this is a very unusual class as the children study philosophy! Seated in a circle around a ritually lit candle, the children – aged three to five – approach the universal subjects of love, power, difference, growing up, even death. And their points of view are fresh, funny and sometimes merciless. Little by little the philosophy workshop becomes a privileged moment where the children reflect on each others’ words, learn how to listen and to build a case. From now on they will be able to think for themselves! With their unusual expressions, their emotions and their contradictions, the children are the beneficiaries of an innovative experiment. JUST A BEGINNING is the fabulous true story of a school with an eye on the future.
About the film The Passionate Apprentices- In a hidden valley in southern Tasmania, three men have spent decades mastering the ancient crafts of knifemaking, beekeeping and breadmaking. Now each has found an apprentice. Skills are being taught, secrets shared, and passions passed on.
And lets not forget School Life!

This review from Backseat Mafia really echoes our belief and sentiments about this beautiful film, even more so following the recent call from teachers to end NAPLAN

“School Life in a wonderful film which demonstrates what school should really be about. Whilst it’s obviously about learning, it’s not just about scholastic knowledge. It’s about nurturing young minds. It’s encouraging independent thinking, without being judgemental. It’s about bringing kids out of their shells, as John is determined to do with one of his students. School Life is full of humour, love and dedication. It’s certainly not just a job for any of the teachers. It’s filmed within a loose framework which brilliantly encapsulates the institution itself. It’s a wonderful observational documentary full of warmth and hopefulness.”
