Grossly Unethical Experiments

But the Whistleblowers are watching Big Brother.

The Cambridge Analytica revelations this week is enough to make you delete your Facebook profile, and go back to living life in full HD 3D reality.
If it were not for the amazing work of journalist Carole Cadwalladr (profile here)
who has been like a bloodhound on this, the Cambridge Analytica story might have gone away by now. Indeed, just when she felt the story was losing traction, along comes this young dude with the pink hair who has the documents.
The Guardian (still sold in hard copy), sets up the interview and again we see that good journalism, a whistle-blower with documents and a willing publisher are a deadly combination.

However, we do have to question everything we’re reading.

Essentially what Cambridge Analytica has revealed is that Politically motivated people are now using the same practices modern digital marketers use, but this time it’s on steroids.
We kind of knew that marketing IS a con job, invented by psychiatrists. To explore that theme further and to get an intro to Edward Bernays, we recommend Adam Curtis’s BBC doc, THE CENTURY OF THE SELF

The ABC’s THE GRUEN TRANSFER has told us over and over: Buyer Beware!

And this Cambridge Analytica story takes it to a whole new level. The digital age promised a liberation of knowledge.
Just read the opening lines of John Perry Barlow’s “Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace”

“Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather.”

Barlow dashed off the whole thing late one night, drunk, after listening to the ignorant speeches by world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 1996. It takes real dreamers like Barlow, recently deceased And whistle-blowers to wake us up to what a U turn the digital world has taken, away from Barlow’s vision, instead careening towards ‘Big Brother’.

So, where is the moral compass? What integrity have we got left when business and politics combine to turn surveillance and manipulation into tools that can swing elections?

Who knew that Facebook isn’t a community, it’s a weapon!

“Our data is out there. Not only is our data out there, but it’s already been used in incredibly negative and damaging ways. You can’t untie that knot.”

Here at Antidote we believe the knot can be untied and we celebrate the incredible, seriously brave work of journalists, whistle-blowers and publishers (and dreamers) fighting back. Without them, where would we be? George Orwell, if he were alive, would endorse some of the films we can show you on these subjects:

See the man and the actions that inspired Edward Snowden in The Most Dangerous Man in America. Daniel Ellsberg worked non-stop for months PHOTOCOPYING thousands of documents that formed ‘The Pentagon Papers’. The story was retold in cinemas as the film ‘The Post’, yet here is all the facts that Spielberg didn’t share with you.

While not on Beamafilm, this film is sure to divide audiences. An Independent film, According to many authorities, since the late 1950’s subliminal content has been tested and delivered through all forms of media, at an increasingly alarming rate. “PROGRAMMING THE NATION?” examines the purported uses, influences and potential subconscious side-effects of what’s going on beneath the surface of advertising, film, music and political propaganda. Even the US military has been accused of using this technology in their Psychological Operations Unit, (PSY OPS) campaign.
Programming prodigy and information activist Aaron Swartz has his fingerprints all over the internet – he was integral to the development of the basic internet protocol RSS and co-founded the global social news and entertainment website Reddit. But it was Swartz’s groundbreaking work in social justice and politics combined with his aggressive approach to information access that ensnared him in a two-year legal nightmare. THE INTERNET’S OWN BOY is a personal story about what we lose when we ignore the implications of technology and its relationship to our civil liberties.
